    Trentepohlia, Fitzgerald Reserve. The orange "moss" on the tress along the California coast always fascinated me. It turns out that it isn't a moss at all. The Trentepohlia is a fascinating life form.

    Sleeping Bear Dunes and Lake Michigan. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has been called among the most beautiful places in America. It certainly deserves its sautés in the National Park system. Walking across these giant dunes, I found myself hundreds of feet above Lake Michigan which stretched out under a dramatic sky.

    Afternoon Surf, Pacifica. The ocean was pushing inland, and the wind pushing back. The afternoon sun created a magical back lighting on the curling surf. I photographed for over an hour, as each wave curl and light combination was so different. It was hard to know if the next one was going to be even more evocative, and the temptation to just keeping making more photographs was hard to resist.

    Ferns, Kings Canyon National Park From the moment I noticed them from across a meadow, I was anxious to wander among the multihued ferns during Kings Canyon Autumm. It was so unusual to see the variety of color, from healthy green, to yellow, a ghostly gray and withering brown. It almost felt like a fairy sate, the ferns being so delicate and graceful as a walked deeper into the field.
