Join Jennifer Wu, Canon Explorer of Light, on an exciting adventure in Lake Clark National Park photographing the Coastal Brown Bears!
Seeing eye to eye with a brown bear is an experience to remember- and we will have many opportunities. We may see them digging for clams in the flats during low tide, eating grass or even engaging in a scuffle. While this is not the time for salmon fishing, it is a great time of year to see small cubs -- watching them playing and nursing is a delight!
The bears are king and they know it. Yet they are not really interested in people, and will pretty much ignore us. They may watch us slyly, with an eye peering back at us as they walk right by. The bears have much to eat here, they are used to people in this area, which allows us to get close. There are no viewing platforms or time schedules for viewing that other locations require. Instead, we have full access to the bears -- in fact, we will probably see bears even from the deck of the lodge.
We will be in Lake Clark National Park, Alaska, at a private lodge. There may be a few other people outside this workshop staying at the lodge as well, but no crowds. It is a special place with breathtaking beauty. Perhaps it is the fresh air or the mountains or the free wild rivers that make it so wonderful just to be there. It is very peaceful due to the remoteness, accessible only by a small plane or boat.
Jennifer will provide instruction in the field as well as lectures on photographing the bears and wildlife. You will learn camera operations and composition. We will focus on expanding your creative vision.
We will photograph bear portraits and bears as an element in the scene for environmental portraits. A bear in the landscape tells one story and details of their paws digging for clams or running cubs, tells another.
Though our focus is on the bears, there are other animals to photograph as well. Jennifer has seen bald eagles, foxes, wolves (not common) and many shorebirds. To see her images of Alaska, visit www.jenniferwu.com.
Canon support staff will be there to help you with equipment and composition, both in the field and in the classroom. We have made arrangements for some long lenses to be available for use, as well as other Canon gear. Before the workshop we will determine your specific needs so we can bring what will best suit the shoot.
With bears at our footsteps, pristine land and home-cooked food, it is a once in a lifetime experience. Come experience the beauty of Alaska with us!

- A variety of nature/wildlife composition techniques
