Capturing Inspiration is a seminar series from Canon Burbank designed to inspire industry professionals. Covering a wide range of topics from the technical to the creative, Capturing Inspiration gives all corners of the filmmaking community a platform to discuss topics and ideas that motivate them.
Production is hard. Even those productions with a large camera department, G&E, sound, and the whole slew of the professionals who have dedicated their life to the craft. However, there are some productions that don’t have that support of a large on-set infrastructure.
Documentary filmmakers are on the front lines, not only wearing the hats of 10+ people, but doing so under ever-changing circumstances and often dangerous environments.
To succeed in a small-scale documentary, a wide range of skillsets must be boiled down into a much smaller group of people. From operating, to lighting, to sound, often times documentarians live by the mantra “whatever it takes”.
Matt Porwoll is no stranger to that mantra. As the cinematographer for such documentaries as the Academy Award Nominated - Emmy Award winning Cartel Land as well as critically acclaimed At the Fork, Matt has an understanding of doing what is needed to tell someone’s story to the world.
Join Matt as he discusses how he choses the right camera for the job, as well as how he balances lighting and audio, as well as other best practices for any filmmaker looking to make the next important documentary.
Want to learn more? Join Matt on Saturday July 29 as he guides a small group of documentary filmmakers through a hands-on workshop. Filmmakers will gain valuable information on the processes Matt uses throughout all stages of production as well as valuable hands-on time with the Matt’s chosen tools of the trade.
