Matthew Cicanese (sick-uh-niece) is a National Geographic Young Explorer Grantee and Emerging League Photographer with the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP). For over ten years, Matthew has been fascinated in observing and documenting the beauty of Earth’s details. Cryptogams (lichens, fungi, mosses, ferns, slime molds, and algae) are Matthew’s strongest interest as a photographer and scientist. Through his camera, Matthew takes viewers on a visual journey into the worlds of these organisms. His photography dissolves the lines between science and fine-art, showing the aesthetic beauty of his subjects while maintaining scientific context. His photography has earned accolades including being a finalist for the 2015 Environmental Photographer of the Year Awards, semi-finalist for BBC’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015, and more.
Matthew invites you to join him as he presents his journey through photography and takes you into the microcosms of subjects he documents around the world. This presentation will reveal the beauty of cryptogams from Florida, the Appalachian Mountains, and a sneak-peek of his recent National Geographic-funded expedition to document Iceland’s beautiful lichen species!
Matthew’s multimedia presentation will cater to photographers both new and advanced, scientists young and old, and anyone with an interest in looking closer at the world around them. He will show you some of the techniques he uses to “get the shot”, offer tips & tricks, hold a live-demo, and end with an audience Q&A.
