About/Bio: Telling stories through photography is Lauren Crew's specialty. Her work beautifully captures the essence of how it felt to be there and connects with her viewers on an emotional level. This attractive blend of authentic emotions mixed with classic portraiture creates a stimulating, lifestyle brand that contributes to the fine art language that Crew speaks. With a B.A. in visual arts, an M.F.A in photography and a grip of experience in the industry, Crew has built a reputation amongst distinguished designers, directors, musicians and photographers who share similar interests in music, style, art and the influential lifestyles that surround them.
“I have no business running my own business”. It is this type of raw honesty that Photographer/Artist Lauren Crew reveals in her latest course. In this seminar, Lauren will discuss the many layers of her journey as an artist, freelance photographer. Her multi-dimensional approach at making a living by way of multiple forms of photography, photo and film production and education will give you deep insight into what it takes to turn your hobby into your career.
Whether it is finding balance between making art and making a living or seeking to find her “visual voice”, this class will explore topics ranging from day to day life as a freelancer to behind the scenes stories on commercial and editorial jobs.
She will dive into all the details of not only what it takes to make ends meet, but also what it feels like to maintain a sense of integrity within one’s work. She will discuss her experiences within portraiture and her constant desire to connect with her subjects no matter what the job is. This will allow us to open the discussion to topics about when it is OK to take someone's picture vs when to ask for permission. You’ll hear what it’s like to shoot dream assignments that involve far away travels while also hearing about the not so dream jobs that keep a roof over her head.
Bottom line, you will hear the truth about one woman’s experience both the good and the bad parts. Whether you are just starting out, daydreaming about turning your hobby into your career, or want to be a part of an engaging discussion about the ins and outs of the business from the perspective of an artist in the industry, this class is for you.
What you will learn:
• When shooting jobs aren’t coming
• What else can we do to make a living without compromising or going astray from our passion as photographers?
• The power of strong networking skills
• The ins and outs of the many angles of the industry
• Insight into creating one’s visual voice.
