Douglas Kirkland is an award-winning celebrity photographer, who has been photographing for over five decades, and his passion in the discovery of beauty never wavers. Photography has been his bride, his companion, his lover, and his confidante throughout his multifaceted career.
'Douglas Kirkland's portraits go far beyond the physical appearance of his subjects and capture the very essence of their being with disarming honesty and sensuality'.
During this evening's presentation Douglas will take you on a journey showing and discussing his amazing body of work from throughout his career, to his most recent assignments. A monograph on his career, A Life in Pictures will be published in Fall 2013.
He is best known for his celebrity portraits but the scope of his work is far wider, Douglas has photographed over 2,000 assignments and more than 600 major celebrities—from Marilyn Monroe to Angelina Jolie. And he has worked on the sets of more than 150 motion pictures, including The Sound of Music, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Out of Africa, Titanic, Moulin Rouge, and most recently, The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio and Baz Luhrmann.
Douglas's photographs have been exhibited throughout the world and are included in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery in London, The National Portrait Gallery in Canberra Australia, the Smithsonian Museum, the George Eastman House, the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane Australia and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences among others.
In September of 2008, Vanity Fair Italy organized a retrospective at the Museum of the Trienale in Milan, and in February of 2012, for the first time, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences commissioned Douglas to shoot portraits of the nominees for Best Actor, Best Actress, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress. These images were exhibited in the Grand Lobby of the Academy with the title of Out of Character and are part of the permanent collection at the Academy as well. His exhibition: Douglas Kirkland—A Life in Pictures at the Museum of Modern Art Gallery GOMA in Brisbane was the 3rd most visited photographic exhibition in the world in 2010.
Douglas has enjoyed a long-term career spanning over fifty years with no sign of slowing down, and tonight's event is a wonderful opportunity to see and hear from a legendary photographer—this is an event you don't want to miss!
